Marshall Public Middle School Wrestling Program (3)

Practice  TBA, at 3:30.

The 2023 Middle School season is TBA.  The season is short with only 2 weeks of practice, Monday – Thursday; followed by 3 weeks of practice (M/W) and competition (Tu/Th). Usually begins the 2nd Monday in February with the competition mostly in March.

Season ends in at the conclusion of the home conference meet.

More mat time!     Join the Club anytime. We begin in November. We have a $75 fee and the school has its own fees. You can compete more than 6 times with us if you want competition.

Leadership – our youngest wrestlers look up to you; you’re the eldest student wrestler in the room. Improve leadership skills.

Learn – the student learns best when he has to teach.

Technique – fine tune your skills as you transition into future high school student-athlete.

Agility – what other sports do you wish to improve? So many sports love wrestlers.

8th graders – This is your last opportunity to have this experience. Why not embrace it and grow?  You’re a freshman next year and won’t be able to do it all. Have no regrets! Especially if you aren’t doing anything! Nothing to lose!

You can be part of our Club and still be in other sports in school and other clubs especially wrestling. The Middle School belongs to the Maunesha Conference and is void of WIAA competition rule.

Marshall Public School District’s Middle School offers a 6-week program starting in mid-February.

Middle School Students and parents are to follow the policies described in the Middle School Co-Curricular Handbook. The policies and requirements for participation in the school sponsored program were established by the Marshall School District Staff and School Board. Please contact the Middle School Office for more details about fees, physicals, forms, handbooks, academics, conduct, attendance and other requirements. All forms must be completed and on file in the Middle School Office by early February.

Marshall Wrestling Club offers a separate program for wrestlers interested in obtaining more instruction and opportunities starting in November. The wrestling club offers opportunity for more competition as well. Join the Club anytime.

High School Wrestlers (5)

SIGN-UP for the Marshall High School (MHS) Wrestling Team either at the Athletic Office or High School Office pending instructions from the Varsity Head Coach/daily announcements at school. Your season begins on Monday, November 14, 2022.  Watch for date and time for the skin fold test.

REQUIREMENTS – Marshall Public Schools require student-athletes and their legal guardians/parents to obtain a copy of and review the Co-Curricular Handbook following instruction set forth by the Marshall School District, WIAA (WI Interscholastic Athletic Association), and the State of WI for requirements, responsibilities and expectations of the student-athlete and guardians.

This includes required physical and completed forms (physical, emergency contact forms, parent permission forms, concussion forms, agreement forms and any other required documentation) on file in the Athletic Office PRIOR to day 1 of student participation in the activity/sport. For wrestlers this deadline is before November 14 or as instructed by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Office.

Review the entire handbook.

FEES are required and set forth by Marshall Public Schools. For details about fees contact the Athletic Office. Inform the office if you are in need to financial assistance. Marshall Wrestling Club is a separate organization from the school. However, we support the school’s wrestling programs.

CONDUCT – Our youth wrestlers look up to you as a role model.  You are representing Marshall High School, the people of Marshall, Wisconsin, and the sport of wrestling. Understand your responsibility and expectations as outlined in the Marshall Public School’s athletic handbook.  Components of being a student-athlete include these attributes and more: Respect of yourself and property;  ability work well with others; speak respectfully to peers, teachers and coaches inside and outside of school are components of being a student-athlete. Follow the rules, manage your time and communicate. This is a year-around expectation and not just during the season. An offense that occurs in the summer may cut into your wrestling season if you are not a fall athlete.

Yes

Our high school wrestlers, often, developed their skills as youth in our Club. What better way than to give back to the next generation of wrestlers. Other students learn of the benefits of teaching and passing on the techniques and skills for success on the mats.

You grow as a young adult when you teach others, show accountability and willingness to help.

You need to be in good standing with your grades. Share your interests with both the head coaches of the Club AND the high school wrestling head coach.

Help at practices and develop your ability to coach at matside.

Learning how to referee is a wonderful way to not only learn what it’s like to be on the other side of the whistle but you’re giving back to the sport and community.

ACADEMICS – Part of being a student-athlete is your educational performance. Take responsibility for knowing where you are in your coursework. In order to participate in extra-curricular activities, you must be at passing level, in each class, during the grading period prior and/or within the start of wrestling season and maintain passing grades. It is your responsibility to contact teachers and inform coaches of your performance in each course taken. Do not let the inability to compete in a qualifying tournament be taken away from you.

We want you to have a successful season – be successful in the classroom.

Headgear is the safety feature wrestlers wear. It prevents injury to a vital organ (if you like hearing). Failure to wear one results in injury and the development of Cauliflower Ear.

HIGH SCHOOL:   WIAA requires headgear.

Marshall Wrestling Club strongly encourages the use of headgear and has some on loan and for purchase ($40-$75). Contact us if you wish to purchase a set.

Your child will not be turned away if you are in need of financial assistance. We will work with you. Please address your concerns to one of the Club Officers and s/he will speak anonymously on your behalf in a closed-session meeting. You may contact us as well and your email is kept confidential.  All cases are kept confidential.

School fees – you are to contact the Marshall High School Athletic Office if your athlete(s) are unable to cover the school fees. Marshall Wrestling Club is separate from the school.

Welcome to Marshall.

Whether or not you have, or your child, has wrestling experience, we invited you to stop in at a practice. Contact us with any questions you aren’t finding answered on our website.

If you know your child wants to wrestle fill out the information under the Membership Info tab.

USA Wrestling competitor cards.

Who?  Children who sign up for Marshall Wrestling Club. High School Wrestlers may also obtain a card and should contact us for more details. Coaches are also eligible for USA cards and go through a training and criminal background check.

What?  It’s a card that many wrestling venues require. It’s a protection for the athlete and the club.  Members  receive the secondary insurance, a year-long subscription to USA Wrestling magazine, and discounts on some USA Wrestling gear.

Why? Marshall Wrestling Club requires this because we are charter members of the WWF (Wisconsin Wrestling Federation) and it helps further protect youth.  If you need more explanation, contact us.

Before you register your child into any competition speak to our head coach.

More details coming soon. We have a 20 point check list for parents.

One word, if you’ve never done this before, is overwhelming. A tournament will look like a zoo but it’s organized chaos at its best.

Wear for competition not for practice.

Athletes:  DO NOT hang your headgear from your straps.

AIR DRY!!!!  Singlets love to be air dried!

NO FABRIC SOFTENER – if you use detergent w/ softener included, please use something else for the singlet and other material like it. Softener wears down the fabric and shortens the lifespan.  These cost $70+ a piece and that adds up.

NO DRYER!  Do not put singlet in the dryer!!

A non-competitive format to exercise what was learned at practice. Wrestlers become comfortable with their practice partners. In a scrimmage we invite ( or travel to) another club to scrimmage with us.

Wrestlers are paired up by height/size/experience and go to the mat for 3-1 minute rounds.

It’s very much like the tournament minus the stress of a tournament.

Wrestlers wear singlets. Not leotards or any other name  you’ve used or heard call in the past.

We encourage the wrestlers to wear them for competition. They are not to be worn for practices.

T-shirts may be worn underneath the singlet. Female wrestlers may wish to exercise that option.

Our singlets were custom-designed by Rock Meinholz, our Club Head Coach.

Yes

Just like there are athletic fees for the public schools; there is a flat fee for membership into Marshall Wrestling Club.

Club Membership Fee is $75/child regardless of when in the school year you join Marshall Wrestling Club.

Club is active year around; however our peak season is November – March.

Competition in Marshall Wrestling Club is strictly voluntary. Speak to Coach before you enter your child into any wrestling competition.

We offer opportunity to put the skills learned at practice into a live format through a non-competitive venue called a scrimmage.

You’re the parent – you can enroll your child in whatever you wish.

Some of the elementary students in our program are involved other activities.

Understand the pros and cons to involving your child into too many activities.

It is wonderful if you are able to expose your child to various activities.

We encourage regular participation in order to gain the most out of what wrestling can do for your child. It’s not an easy sport. The more mat time the better for your child to develop his/her techniques. Sometimes, young children are not ready for wrestling at age 5 or 6 but may have gained better motor/fine skills at an older age. If you find that your child falls into that category be eager to get involved again. You and your child may be surprised at the difference.
